This hits home. The slow death of traditional media and the wild shifts in digital behavior are fascinating (and a little unsettling). The way people consume information is shifting from passive absorption (TV, print) to fragmented, algorithm-driven rabbit holes. Great article, Kim.
We. Are. So. In. Sync! The platforms are killing themselves. Isn’t it weird?? I’ve always loved socials - it really could’ve been (maybe could still be??) fantastic. Sigh 😮💨
I wasn't terribly surprised by any of the data, especially the decline in reach from FB. They're clearly only interested in pay-to-play.
On the one hand, it's a little disheartening, but on the other hand, it's exciting. Substack (and hopefully Bluesky) are spots of light right now. I hope we see a new option pop up that does things differently - and takes significant marketshare from the platforms that stopped caring about its users.
I took a quick look at your PDF. I'm going to look at it more later when I'm on my computer – I love Data! 📉
I suspect that there will be a much bigger push for more digital intention. Just being on platforms for the sake of it it's not only exhausting but it just isn't any fun. And that was the whole point of social media – to connect and enjoy it.
I agree about more digital intention. The less I use the platforms, the more I feel at peace, which spurs more creativity.
And even then, I have to be careful about the content I consume (too much political content exhausts me, even if it supports my beliefs) - Substack included.
Love the stats, Kim. I'm pretty much where you are with the platforms except I never look at TikTok unless a friend sends me something to watch. Honing in on what works best for your business AND is enjoyable makes me pretty active on Substack these days.
Have you tried the JotForm AI Agents? Curious to know what it's like.

Thanks so much,
I totally agree - the shifts in behavior are fascinating (probably a great time to be a sociologist).
I see more and more people shifting to being offline and more selective about the platforms they use.
I think the shift away from followers and constant posting is overall positive and I hope it will lead to the creation of better content.
Thanks, Deidre,
I think so, too. It's lovely to see people showing up here and truly wanting to engage and create relationships again.
Our "social usage/thoughts" are so very similar; the only thing I haven't done yet is delete my X account.
I have to admit, that felt pretty great. ;-) Even at 19k followers - but to be fair, it was probably the platform I used the least.

Ha, of course, we are!

I like data in simple terms, lol.

I’ve had to take major steps back from the politics. It’s just too depressing.

The only thing I'm enjoying on TikTok right now is #worldtok. Seeing creators from all over somehow makes me feel more connected.
Substack is where I enjoy being (I just need to tweak my feed a bit).
I'm testing the JotForm AI agents this weekend, and I will let you know.
I've been playing around a bit with the no-code builders and my mind is blown. There's not enough time in the day, lol.
